The Ethereum Foundation’s Tim Beiko has announced that core Ethereum developers have set a precise time for implementing the Dencun upgrade.
This upgrade, featuring the eagerly awaited proto-dank sharding functionality via EIP-4844, is slated for activation at slot number 8626176.
Based on current estimates, this slot is expected to occur around 8:55 am ET on March 13. The Dencun upgrade will introduce various technical improvements, including blob transactions and temporary storage.
Ethereum developers finalized the date during an “AllCoreDevs” meeting on February 8, following the successful introduction of Dencun on the Holesky testnet on February 7.
EIP-4844 seeks to integrate off-chain “data blobs” into Ethereum transactions, allowing for additional data inclusion without impacting block processing speeds.
Proto-dank sharding is a sharding approach that introduces “blob-carrying transactions” to increase block space on Ethereum layer-2 networks like zkSync, Optimism, and Arbitrum, assisting in meeting their data storage needs.
In the Proto-dank sharding plan, each block will be limited to containing 16 blobs, each no longer than 128 kb, as outlined by Blocknative. This is anticipated to add approximately 2 MB of block space.
