President Joe Biden inadvertently became associated with Bitcoin after he shared a picture of himself sporting laser eyes on his X and Instagram profiles.
The caption, “just like we drew it up,” was a nod to the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl, posted shortly after the game.
Laser eyes were likely part of the “Dark Brandon” meme, an edgier online persona attributed to Biden by his supporters to celebrate policy achievements. Many in the crypto community interpreted it as a subtle endorsement of Bitcoin.
Crypto X was fast to react to the meme. Bankless inquired about the implications of the post on the ETH/BTC chart, while an anonymous user known as WhalePanda indirectly accused Biden of “cultural appropriation.”
It’s worth noting that the president has not endorsed any policies that slant in favor of Bitcoin or cryptocurrency more broadly, making it extremely unlikely that Biden would post endorsing a particular crypto asset.
The laser eye trend originated from a social media campaign aimed at pushing Bitcoin’s price to $100,000 by the end of 2021. While this goal wasn’t achieved, influential figures like NFL player Tom Brady, socialite Paris Hilton, and entrepreneur Elon Musk participated in the trend.
