PlayDapp fell victim to two separate security breaches this month. These incidents led to the unauthorized creation and theft of PLA tokens collectively valued at over $290 million.
An exploit on February 9 initially allowed a hacker to mint 200 million PLA tokens worth $36.5 million. Despite PlayDapp’s attempt to negotiate, offering a $1 million white hat reward for the return of the stolen assets, the hacker went on to mint an additional 1.59 billion PLA tokens valued at $253.9 million on February 12. The attacker then proceeded to launder these funds through various crypto exchanges.
PlayDapp’s efforts to communicate and negotiate with the perpetrator through on-chain transactions proved futile. The hacker’s refusal to engage has prompted PlayDapp to consider a $1 million bounty for information leading to the recovery of the stolen funds and to collaborate with law enforcement in tracking down the offender.
In response to the crisis, PlayDapp has paused the PLA smart contract to protect holders’ assets and is working on a solution to mitigate the impact on its user base. This includes discussions on token migration and potential airdrops and collaboration with crypto exchanges and forensic teams to track the illicitly minted tokens.
As the situation unfolds, PlayDapp remains committed to updating the community and safeguarding its ecosystem against further vulnerabilities.
