Amid growing concerns over cybersecurity threats in the crypto sphere, the US Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has launched an inquiry into the Trust Wallet app’s iOS version. This follows reports of a potential vulnerability that could expose users’ digital assets to theft.
NIST’s investigation centers on misusing the cryptographic library within a specific iteration of the Trust Wallet app. This misuse could generate mnemonic phrases vulnerable to exploitation, potentially allowing attackers to siphon funds from unsuspecting users’ wallets.
The agency’s scrutiny follows a previous incident in July 2023, where a similar vulnerability was exploited, resulting in substantial financial losses. NIST underscores the urgency of addressing such vulnerabilities to prevent future economic harm.
Further complicating matters, Secbit Labs’ independent investigation revealed alarming vulnerabilities within the Trust Wallet app’s iOS platform dating back to 2018. These weaknesses, tied to an older wallet generation flaw, were linked to significant thefts in July 2023, raising red flags about the app’s security protocols.
