Pizza Ninjas, an NFT platform, has debuted a Nintendo 64 (N64) emulator on Bitcoin’s Ordinals protocol, allowing game data to be immortalized on the blockchain.
According to additional reports from Pizza Ninja, using Google’s Brotli compression reduces game file sizes by around 80%. This makes the files small enough to fit into a single Bitcoin block or be distributed across transactions. It opens up new possibilities for preserving gaming history on the blockchain.
Recently, Pizza Ninjas inscribed the iconic game GoldenEye 64 for $6,000 at current Bitcoin transaction fees. “With Brotli Compression, file size reductions of around 80% are achievable. For example, uncompressed, Goldeneye 64 is 12.4 MB, but with Brotli we can get it down to just 3.15 MB!” stated Pizza Ninjas.
This is enough to fit inside one 4 MB Bitcoin block or be split among 8 transactions under 400 KB. Thanks to currently low network fees, inscribing GoldenEye at 15 sats/vbyte cost only $6,000 – quite reasonable for a community interested in seeing these classic games preserved indefinitely.
Though released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 sold over 30 million units. Pizza Ninjas’ innovation allows pivotal games from its library to be immortalized on the blockchain for future generations.
