U.S. Representative Tom Emmer recently criticized the Biden administration for collecting data from Bitcoin mining companies. He argued against the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) objection to public criticism over the decision, calling it an “emergency” assessment made without properly weighing implications.
In a statement on X, Emmer said Bitcoin mining is not a public safety issue and the data collection represents “an abuse of power,” framing Bitcoin as a threat. He emphasized the industry’s role in the Bitcoin network and American values of openness and permissionless attributes.
Emmer tied the policy to broader concerns about the administration’s energy priorities, implying crypto is being singled out while ignoring other energy consumption issues. Additionally, he questioned the rationale behind the data collection, arguing the mining process adaptively meets energy needs and that requesting Scope 3 climate data is an overreach.
In another interview with FOX Business, Emmer said companies ignoring the order could face criminal and civil penalties of up to $10,000 per day. The survey period ends in July, requiring monthly data submission at companies’ discretion.
