According to a recent report, Law enforcement agencies have successfully disrupted the operations of the LockBit ransomware group by seizing servers, obstructing activities, and identifying cryptocurrency wallets used to collect ransom payments.
Operation Cronos, run by the FBI, struck LockBit’s infrastructure – taking down servers, source code, and data storage. While LockBit affiliates accumulate hundreds of millions in earnings from ransom payments, security experts estimate.
Authorities across the UK, United States, and Europe have seized over 35 LockBit servers. According to updates on Friday, agencies have identified approximately 30,000 Bitcoin wallets linked to the ransomware syndicate.
The crackdown on LockBit is ongoing. Authorities have restricted access to 85 LockBit-related accounts on Binance, the largest crypto exchange. However, over 500 affiliate accounts are still active. Sophisticated evasion techniques also make tracking and prosecuting affiliates challenging. Additionally, key LockBit members remain at large.
Nonetheless, actions against LockBit are considered a major achievement so far. Law enforcement continues monitoring LockBit affiliates and how other ransomware groups might react. The need for relentless surveillance persists, regardless of the severity of cyber threats. However, there is still room for improvement in dismantling this digital extortion network.
