An internal message delivered to OpenAI workers states that the artificial intelligence startup “categorically disagrees” with the lawsuit Elon Musk filed against the company.
Musk, a former employee and co-founder of OpenAI, filed a lawsuit against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, late on Thursday. He claimed that OpenAI’s original goal of developing open-source technology free from corporate priorities had been compromised by the company’s close ties to Microsoft Corp.Â
In a memo obtained by Bloomberg News, OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon countered Elon Musk’s notion that the startup is a “de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft, suggesting Musk’s claims might originate from regret about not being involved with the company currently.
In another memo, Altman spoke to Musk as a hero and expressed his loss for the guy he knew who challenged others by developing more advanced technologies.
Among other things, Musk is suing for grounds of unfair business practices, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. As late as 2019, he filed the lawsuit in the position as a donor to OpenAI’s nonprofit parent organization, hoping to compel OpenAI to cease providing direct financial advantages to Microsoft and Altman.
Kwon stated in the email that the goal of the organization is to “ensure AGI benefits all humanity,” a phrase that alludes to hypothetical software that is capable of carrying out a variety of jobs more effectively than a human being. Additionally, Kwon stated that OpenAI is independent and directly opposes Microsoft.
Additionally, Kwon stated that he wanted to provide an update to the staff on “inquiries from government agencies,” which appears to be a reference to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s inquiry that began following Altman’s short-lived removal from the firm by the board late last year.
Kwon stated that “after the events of last November, they asked us for information and this matches what we’d expect given the circumstances,” without naming the agency. According to Kwon, the business is assisting the authorities.
