The ministers of the G7 countries came to a historic consensus in Verona, Italy, at the vital global debate on artificial intelligence (AI). G7 nations agreed that strengthening local AI digital ecosystems requires collaboration with developing nations under the “Digital Development – Growing Together.”
In collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Italian G7 Presidency advocates for multi-stakeholder partnerships to enhance local impact in developing nations.
A few important areas are building secure and open data models, democratizing computing capacity, and bolstering efforts to enhance AI for sustainable development. These effirts aim to assist development and implementation in a safe, secure, and reliable manner by ensuring fair, inclusive, and responsible access to AI.
Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, expresses gratitude for the G7 Ministerial’s consensus on digital development, affirming the commitment to democratize AI resources, especially through engagement with African governments, and the private sector, including start-ups and industries.
The Italian G7 Presidency and the Brazilian G20 Presidency promote discussions and initiatives in this historic year for digital development, with AI being recognized as a shared goal for sustainable development.
“In line with our G20 theme on mobilizing actions for a just world and a sustainable planet, we look forward to working together with the G7 countries and other partners in the G20 to move forward our priority on AI to drive sustainable development and to reduce inequalities,” stated Ambassador Luciano Mazza de Andrade, the G20 Digital Economy Working Group Chair from Brazil.
The administrator of the UNDP, Achim Steiner, highlights the significance of connecting local effects to global discourse to guarantee that AI’s potential advantages are felt by all communities on the planet. AI drives good global change as partnerships are created to advance equitable development solutions with the G7, leveraging the UNDP Rome Center.
After the Verona Process on Digital Development, the Italian G7 Presidency and UNDP will collaborate to co-design an AI Hub for Sustainable Development in Africa in 2024. This initiative involves technology industry stakeholders and start-ups dedicated to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
