Apple Inc. has acquired Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI, enhancing its AI capabilities for a major push into generative AI in 2024, as reported by Bloomberg.Â
The acquisition, completed earlier this year, saw many DarwinAI employees join Apple’s AI division. Notably, AI researcher Alexander Wong from the University of Waterloo has joined Apple as a director.
DarwinAI, known for its AI technology in manufacturing component inspection and AI size and speed optimization, aligns with Apple’s focus on device-based AI processing. This move signals Apple’s intent to bolster its AI offerings amid industry competition.
While Apple remains discreet about future plans, this acquisition underscores its commitment to innovation. DarwinAI, based in Waterloo, Ontario, had garnered significant investments and collaborated with industry giants like Lockheed Martin and Intel.
Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 features will leverage generative AI, complementing its efforts to integrate AI into customer service, software development tools like Xcode, and productivity features such as auto-generated presentations and text completion.
The company’s AI advancements are expected to be highlighted at its upcoming developers conference in June.
