During ETHGlobal in London, Nick Johnson, the mastermind behind Ethereum Name Service (ENS), disclosed how a generous grant from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin contributed to the early development of ENS. Initially unsure about the financial requirements to build ENS, Johnson was pleasantly surprised when Buterin doubled the requested grant amount, providing the project with a much-needed push toward realization.
Transitioning from Google to Blockchain Innovation
Johnson’s journey from a New Zealand-born software engineer at Google to a pivotal figure in the Ethereum ecosystem highlights his transition towards blockchain innovation. Drawn to Ethereum for its programmability over Bitcoin’s limited functionality, Johnson’s expertise in software engineering enabled him to tackle complex challenges in Ethereum’s infrastructure, leading to the inception of ENS.
Since its launch, ENS has registered over two million addresses, becoming a vital tool for users navigating the Web3 space. However, Johnson emphasizes the importance of measuring real-world usage over registration numbers.
ENS plans to expand its infrastructure to Ethereum layer-2 solutions and enhance its “plug-and-play” capabilities, ensuring broader accessibility and utility in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
