The individual behind the exploitation of the HECO Chain transferred roughly 40,392 Ether, valued at $145.7 million, through the anonymity of Tornado Cash within just eight days.
They executed 19 transactions to Tornado Cash addresses to obscure the origin of the stolen Ether, making tracking it back extremely challenging, according to crypto investigator PeckShield.
A significant portion of stolen funds, totaling nearly $145.7 million in Ether, was cleverly funneled through a crypto-mixing protocol called Tornado Cash by a perpetrator exploiting the HECO Chain.
This individual made numerous transfers, attempting to obscure the origin of the funds and render them untraceable. One notable transaction involved 11,300 ETH, equivalent to over $39.5 million, sent in a single transfer.
Additionally, a separate 0.2 ETH transaction worth $699 was sent to another Tornado Cash address for further obfuscation. This tactic is commonly employed by crypto hackers to conceal ownership of illicitly obtained funds.
Notably, on March 21, proceeds from a $24 million Rocket Pool hack in September 2023 were also sent through Tornado Cash.
