Sam Bankman-Fried, the former FTX CEO, is expected to be sentenced on March 28th. This is linked to his arrest and impending sentencing on charges of deceiving investors about FTX’s financial health, which resulted in its collapse in November 2022. The sentencing hearing starts at 9:30 am ET on March 28th in New York.
The prosecutors have requested that the defendant receive a severe sentence, suggesting that he spend 40–50 years behind bars. They view this as a punishment that perfectly captures the fallout from Sam Bankman-Fried’s actions. Millions were lost by the investors as well.
The prosecution did, however, point out that Bankman-Fried faces a maximum sentence of 115 years. His attorneys, however, have pushed for a much lighter sentence of 6.5 years.
Should the judge decide to dismiss the case, then the bank will arguably have a substantial sum to pay due to the losses, and the victims will suffer damages. This case is not only significant because it is among the first few high-profile cases in this space but also as it is one of the earliest and remains one of the few “first” convictions in the crypto industry.
Whether or not the members of the Bankman-Fried family will be present is still unknown.
