A surge of enigmatic malware has reportedly set its sights on gamers, siphoning Bitcoin from their wallets and causing a plummet in BTC values, now hovering around $70,265. This malicious software, part of a fresh info-stealing campaign, has also targeted individuals utilizing cheat codes in video games.
According to vx-underground, an online repository for malware information, an unidentified threat actor is behind the scheme, pilfering login credentials from users of pay-to-cheat gaming software.
The onslaught has affected players who purchase cheating tools, resulting in over 4.9 million compromised accounts across various platforms including Activision Blizzard’s Battle.net and the gaming-centric trading site Elite PVPers. Cheat software markets like PhantomOverlay and UnknownCheats have also fallen victim to the attacks.
Reports have surfaced of users falling victim to crypto-draining, with their Electrum BTC wallets being emptied. Despite efforts to trace the origins of the malware, its creators have made it challenging to pinpoint.
However, PhantomOverlay claims to have insights into its source and is collaborating with Activision Blizzard to aid affected users. The gaming giant, acknowledging the threat, emphasizes caution against downloading unauthorized software to safeguard against potential compromises.
