A fraudulent token named ENA, mirroring Ethena Labs’s legitimate ENA token, was exploited for 480 BNB tokens, equivalent to approximately $290,000 in value on Binance’s launch pool.
The vulnerability exploited remains unidentified, as reported by on-chain security firm PeckShield at 8:31 am UTC on March 29. This incident, occurring shortly after Ethena Labs’s ENA token listing on Binance Launchpool, caused widespread confusion.
Ethena Labs, known for introducing its USDe synthetic dollar on the mainnet in February, achieved significant success with its DApp, offering a remarkable annual percentage yield (APY) of 67% on March 8.
Despite the exploit, the financial impact is relatively modest compared to other crypto hacks, such as the over-$11 million Prisma Finance hack on March 28.Â
Crypto hacks continue to undermine investor confidence, with over $200 million lost across 32 incidents in 2024 up to February 29, marking a 15.4% increase from the same period in 2023. Chainalysis’s “2024 Crypto Crime Report” highlights a decline in total funds stolen in 2023, particularly attributing it to a decrease in DeFi hacking, which plummeted by 63.7% year-over-year.
