OpenAI intends to create an office in Tokyo in April, according to a person familiar with the situation, as the pioneer of artificial intelligence starts to expand its global operations.
According to the person, who spoke about sensitive information while requesting anonymity, the Japan office will be its first in Asia. After establishing offices in London and Dublin last year, this will be the company’s third overseas location.
After revealing ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI ignited a flurry of interest in artificial intelligence. According to a December Bloomberg article, the San Francisco startup has been in talks to seek capital at a valuation of at least $100 billion.
The use of AI is growing among Japanese businesses; companies like Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. and SoftBank Corp. are rushing to provide services for their country’s speakers of Japanese.
Co-founder and chief executive officer of OpenAI Sam Altman stated that the company is considering creating an office in Japan following a meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April of last year. In addition to working with the government to execute legislation and mitigate risks, it intends to grow its Japanese language services.
