A Bitcoin wallet provider, UniSat, issued a warning about a fake iOS app called “unisatWallet” on Apple’s app store.
The app, created by Zunyi Yibai Network Technology, mimics UniSat’s decentralized digital asset storage solution. It’s unclear how long the fake app has been available, and its creators are unknown. As of now, there are no reviews or reported losses from users.
The counterfeit wallet is likely a ploy to steal private keys and seed phrases, crucial for securing crypto wallets. These elements help users recover or transfer their wallets but can also be exploited by hackers to steal tokens.
UniSat’s legitimate wallet has over 300,000 weekly users and operates as a browser plugin, similar to MetaMask. The warning follows a double-spend attack on UniSat’s platform last year, where BRC-20 assets were compromised due to a codebase bug.
BRC-20 is a token standard for creating fungible assets on Bitcoin’s network, similar to Ethereum’s ERC-20. It was created by pseudonymous developer Domo based on the Ordinals protocol, leading to a $3 billion market in decentralized finance (DeFi) on Bitcoin’s blockchain.
The fake app “unisatWallet” poses a risk to users’ cryptocurrency holdings and highlights the importance of using trusted wallet solutions. UniSat advises users to be cautious and only download apps from reputable sources to protect their digital assets.
