A new wave of cryptocurrency scams is targeting Indian investors, with fraudulent recruiters posing as job offers. One victim, 22-year-old Naved Alam from Pune, lost approximately $3000 worth of crypto due to this scheme.
Alam shared his experience on March 31, warning others about the ordeal. It began when a user named ‘crankybugatti’ approached him about a product designer role related to a web3 communication app called ‘SocialSpectra.’
After initial discussions, Alam was directed to a Discord channel, which appeared legitimate. However, the situation turned sour during an HR interview. The fake recruiters sent Alam a link for onboarding, claiming it was for an international communication app. In reality, it was malware.
This malicious software drained Alam’s Phantom wallet and liquidated his staked assets on Kamino Finance, a Solana-based defi platform.
Alam stated, “In a matter of moments, I lost $3000 to scammers who prey on unsuspecting individuals looking for legitimate opportunities.”
Alam, addressing a local media outlet, revealed his attempt to retrieve funds from ‘crankybuggati’, the alleged fraudster. Despite this effort, the scammer denied involvement and assured a resolution through a contact in cybercrime security. However, Alam expressed skepticism towards this claim.
‘Crankybuggati’s’ account was suspended when the statement was made. This incident coincides with intensified regulatory actions against cryptocurrency-related fraud in India. Alam also added, “Always verify the authenticity of job offers, and never download anything unless you’re absolutely sure of its source.”
Just last month, the Enforcement Directorate filed charges against 299 entities duping investors with promises of crypto mining investments.
