Miami-based digital Crypto exchanger Raul Rodriguez, also known as raultiovigia, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for processing money transfers without a license.
From 2016 to 2022, at LocalBitcoins.com, his business platform, Rodriguez executed thousands of transactions worth over $5 million operated in digital cryptocurrency.
Rodriguez ran his virtual currency business illegally for over five years, despite regulations mandating administrators to register as money transmitters. His clients included a convicted drug dealer and a known money launderer, highlighting the scale of his illicit activities.
United States Attorney Lapointe Markenzy and IRS-CI Special Client Mattwer D Line declared the sentence. The Miami-Dade IRS-CI, under the guidance of the FBI and DEA, undertook the investigation.
US Assistant Christopher Browne was assigned as the prosecutor, with Emily Stone representing the asset forfeiture.
Rodriguez’s conviction confirms the unrelenting resolve of law enforcers in tackling crypto crimes within the cryptocurrency environment.
