Shashi Tharoor, a former minister of state for HRD and external affairs and the Congress candidate for the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in the general election of 2024, revealed in his nomination papers that he has a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in his portfolio,
This affidavit states that Shashi Tharoor, a three-time member of parliament, owns a Bitcoin ETF valued at Rs 5,11,314.
A Bitcoin ETF tracks Bitcoin’s price, allowing investors to invest in Bitcoin indirectly through ETF shares rather than owning the digital currency directly. Bitcoin ETFs trade on stock exchanges, providing broader investor access and potentially more liquidity than buying Bitcoin directly from crypto exchanges.
Apart from the Bitcoin ETF, Shashi Tharoor has made investments in corporate bonds worth Rs 3.46 crore, equities worth Rs 9.33 crore, certificate of deposits worth Rs 91.7 lakhs, options investments worth Rs 19.98 lakhs, US Treasury Securities worth Rs 2 crore, and a loan of Rs 1.1 crore to Estee Capital LLC, USA.
The Congress candidate’s affidavit also revealed that he possesses Rs 36,000 in cash. He also has stakes in several mutual funds and other investment plans.
As per the affidavit that was submitted to the Election Commission of India, the total value of his movable assets is Rs 49.3 crore. In addition, Tharoor has immovable property valued at Rs 6.75 crore.
