Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced plans to label AI-generated content starting in May to address concerns over deepfakes. Rather than deleting altered content, Meta will add “Made with AI” labels to provide transparency and context.
This decision follows criticism from Meta’s oversight board, prompting a shift in approach towards manipulated media.
The labeling initiative will roll out in two stages, beginning in May 2024. Content deemed to have a high risk of misleading the public will receive prominent labels. In July, Meta will discontinue the removal of altered media solely based on its previous policy.
However, content violating other community standards, such as hate speech or election interference, will still be removed.
Monika Bickert, Vice President of Content Policy at Meta, emphasized the broader scope of the labeling approach and the company’s commitment to balancing freedom of expression with platform integrity.
This move aligns with efforts by digital giants and AI companies to combat manipulated content targeting voters, with Meta, Google, and OpenAI agreeing on a watermarking standard for AI-generated photos.
