Tech giant Microsoft warns of potential interference by China, with support from North Korea, in upcoming elections in the US, South Korea, and India through AI-generated content, following a trial during Taiwan’s presidential poll.
The tech giant predicts Chinese state-backed cyber groups will target high-profile elections in 2024, following a trial during Taiwan’s presidential poll. Microsoft highlights that China is likely to employ AI-generated content such as memes, videos, and audios distributed through social media to sway opinions in their favor.
Although the immediate impact is minimal, the company warns of potential effectiveness in the future. In the Taiwan election, a Beijing-backed group circulated AI-generated memes and fake audio to influence voters.
Additionally, Chinese groups are actively engaging in social media to understand US voter demographics, posing divisive questions. This report comes amidst revelations of Microsoft’s security lapses allowing Chinese cyber actors to breach senior US officials’ email accounts.
The US and UK governments have previously accused China of conducting cyber campaigns targeting politicians and businesses.
