Steven Nerayoff, an advisor to the Ethereum network, has filed a lawsuit against the United States authorities for false accusations and abuse by federal agents from 2019 until 2023.
The case, filed under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), seeks $9.6 billion in damages for the claim of intentional misconduct considering the criminal case brought against him in 2019. The legal dispute that continued for approximately four years ended in May 2023, with the rejection of the lawsuit by the U.S. government.
A newly filed SEC-95 document reveals that FOX Business journalist Eleanor Terrett reported that Nerayoff claimed federal agents knew the charges against him were completely baseless. Next, he argues that certain specialists not only use retaliatory and intimidating techniques but also falsify evidence to demand financial compensation from him on the charges of extortion.
The FBI arrested Nerayoff and his Alchemist associate Michael Hlady in September 2019. Authorities charged both Nerayoff and Hlady with extortion, claiming that they threatened to “destroy a cryptocurrency startup if they were not paid millions of dollars” in Ether.
Nerayoff’s legal squad assumes that the government bears responsibility for the irrecoverable losses to his reputation and businesses, which makes the lawsuit against the U.S. government justified.
Nerayoff made allegations about various aspects of Ethereum’s development and operations, including fraudulent initial coin offerings, personal misconduct, and collusion with corrupt officials. One of Nerayoff’s claims is that Ethereum received preferential treatment from regulators, also known as “ETHGate” in the community.
