Entertainment industry workers have reached a preliminary agreement with top record labels to safeguard their rights and prevent the exploitative use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The new “Sound Recordings Agreement,” approved unanimously by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) executive committee, covers the period from 2021 to 2026.
The agreement addresses the growing concern over the use of generative AI to replicate the voices of artists without their consent. The new terms mandate that record labels must obtain consent and provide compensation before releasing songs featuring digital replicas of artists’ voices.
Furthermore, the agreement exclusively recognizes “artists,” “singers,” and “royalty artists” as human individuals, ensuring the essence of music remains rooted in genuine human expression.
The deal also includes enhancements to health and retirement benefits, as well as an expansion in the portion of streaming revenue subject to contributions. This comprehensive agreement is a testament to the industry’s commitment to protecting the rights of its hardworking professionals and ensuring a fair and equitable future in the face of technological advancements.
