Coinbase is rolling out three ads worth $15 million during NBA Playoffs, aiming to draw sports fans into the crypto world. These ads will air on TNT, ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC.
Using pizza as a humorous example, the ads highlight the complexity of traditional payment systems compared to the simplicity of crypto payments. In one scene, pizza goes through a lengthy approval process, demonstrating the hassle of traditional finance.
The commercials also show how traditional banking systems come with hidden fees and delays. As people swipe slices from the pizza, it represents what happens to money when spent or sent.
The ad ends with a delivery boy picking up the pizza, and passing through a door labeled “surcharge.” He points out the illusion of instant transactions with credit cards and Venmo, revealing the complexity behind the scenes, and says, “We deserve a better system, easier, simpler, faster. That’s how crypto works.”
Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, Faryar Shirzad, emphasizes that what seems like instant transactions is part of a complex system hidden by a digital interface.
