The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is firming up its oversight authority over essential platforms in the AI market because of uncertainties over market dominance. As reported by CMA, it is looking into recent collaborations that include Amazon and Microsoft, which are raising competition issues across the UK.
The CMA also said it would investigate Amazon’s substantial investment in AI developer Anthropic and Microsoft’s partnerships with Mistral AI and OpenAI. The CMA aims to determine whether these deals comply with UK union regulations and assess their impact on market competition.
Joel Bamford, the CMA’s executive director of the union, emphasized the need for impartial assessment to safeguard competition in the AI space.
These investigations follow the CMA’s findings, which indicate a trend of Big Tech firms funneling funds into AI ventures, potentially shaping markets and consolidating power. The agency is cautious of repeating past mistakes that led to the emergence of dominant platforms.
While Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claims that partnerships such as the one with OpenAI promote competition, the CMA remains dedicated to ensuring fairness in the AI industry.
