British singer FKA Twigs testified before the Senate on Tuesday, revealing she had created an AI version of herself to control her social media interactions. The revelation came as she testified before the Senate in the push to pass the NO FAKES Act, which is meant to safeguard the rights of artists from unauthorized use of AI in their likeness and voice.
Twigs testified before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property to warn that AI technology may destabilize personal and creative rights. She emphasized that it’s very important for artists to control technology and protect their careers and identities.
The singer detailed how “AI twigs” are programmed to emulate her voice across multiple languages, enhancing her engagement with fans while she focuses on her art.
Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kyncl also contributed to the hearing, calling for legislation to uphold intellectual property rights, align with First Amendment rights, and establish measures to prevent unethical AI practices.
This testimony reflects widespread concerns in the entertainment industry about the potential misuse of artist voices and likenesses. As AI technologies evolve, there is a pressing need for legislation to address these issues, which are becoming increasingly controversial, especially in music.
