Colombian President Gustavo Petro allegedly accepted over $500,000 of illicit crypto donations from a fraudulent project to fund his 2022 campaign.
According to local media, the cryptocurrency project Daily COP made the illicit donation of 2 billion Colombian pesos, or roughly $514,036, in crypto to Petro’s campaign in 2022.
A meeting in February 2022 took place at a bakery in Bogota between Petro’s then-campaign manager Ricardo Roa and Daily COP co-founder Sebastián Betancourt.
During the meeting a former contractor for the token project, Omar Hernández was present and revealed, “The issue of regulation and the adoption of [blockchain] technology…was discussed” and it aimed to form some kind of “joint venture [or] alliance with the government.”
