A cryptocurrency user who lost nearly $68 million in an address poisoning scam has recovered over 96% of the stolen funds. After the attacker received the 1,155 Wrapped Bitcoin he converted them into ETH. At the moment 22,960 ETH worth around $65.7million were eventually sent back to the victim. From the morning of Friday 8AMUTC, numerous wallets were sending ETH to the account.
The victim early on reached out to the attacker via a message on etherscan.io saying,
“You won bro.
Keep 10% to yourself and get 90% back.
Then we’ll forget about that.
We both know that 7m will definetely make your life better, but 70m won’t let you sleep well.”
Analysts believe that the security team that is working for the victim may have already identified leads about the attacker’s identity which can be of assistance in whatever negotiation position the victim intends to take.
The story offers hope to the victims. However, in not every crypto scam you find hackers ready to negotiate with the victim for funds return. The incident demonstrates the potential benefits of staying calm in the face of loss. Users are advised to double-check wallet addresses before sending any cryptocurrency.
