President Joe Biden has signed an executive order blocking a Chinese-owned company from owning land near Wyoming’s Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. The order instructed the property to be transferred away, thus pointing out the national security issues, especially the supervision threat that the military base could cause.
The company that was in the picture, MineOne Partners Limited, bought the property in June 2022 and started to prepare for a crypto-mining operation. However, after analyzing the transaction, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) perceived serious national security risks, so they issued the divestment order.
The Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen pointed out the government’s strong commitment to national security. She underlined the importance of the CFIUS in the process of examining the foreign investments that may pose threats to the U. S. military sites. The timing coincides with escalating tensions between the US and China, marked by a trade and national security conflict. Additionally, the US has recently unveiled new tariffs on Chinese imports.
