Alexey Pertsev has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal in s-Hertogenbosch following his conviction for money laundering. The court has yet to decide whether to approve the appeal. Pertsev can also request to await his trial at home.
The court confirmed that Pertsev was sentenced to 64 months imprisonment and was taken into custody immediately after the verdict on Tuesday.Â
The court’s translated verdict stated that “Tornado Cash does not pose any barrier for people with criminal assets who want to launder them,” leading to Pertsev’s conviction.
Pertsev was one of the major developers of Tornado Cash, which lets Ethereum users transact anonymously. In 2022, authorities blamed Tornado Cash for posing a threat to national security, and he was arrested.
During the trial, Pertsev maintained that Tornado Cash was not to blame for how other people used it. The final result of his appeal is regarded as an element that will be closely followed by both lovers and haters of cryptocurrency regulation.
