The artificial intelligence company, OpenAI and American Media Company ‘News Corp’ announced a significant partnership today, where OpenAI will be granted access to “premium news” content in order to improve ChatGPT services.
In this deal, OpenAI gains access to current and archived content from major News Corp publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and others. News Corp will also provide expertise to uphold journalism standards. The merger is seen as ChatGPT getting sharp journalistic content in order to improve its performance.
The partnership benefits both sides. OpenAI gains diverse content to enhance ChatGPT’s answers, while News Corp gets a new revenue source, addressing industry concerns about tech giants using content without compensation.
Robert Thomson, Chief Executive of News Corp, said, “We are delighted to have found principled partners in Sam Altman and his trusty, talented team who understand the commercial and social significance of journalists and journalism.”
While financial details aren’t disclosed, estimates suggest a $250 million investment over five years. News Corp shares rose 4% post-announcement.
Controversy arose over journalist protections amid AI use. OpenAI has engaged with publishers to address such concerns ethically. Prior deals with Axel Springer and The Financial Times aim to ensure AI content creation respects copyright and journalism ethics.
This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to ethical AI that respects and enhances journalism’s standards, shaping a future where reliable news plays a crucial role in technological advancements.
