ChatGPT is experiencing widespread issues, with many users unable to access the service. Reports indicate that some users are facing website accessibility problems, while others cannot generate responses. On desktops, the chatbot displays a red “Internal Server Error” message, and similar issues are occurring on iPhones.
Downdetector, a site that monitors the status of online services, noted that the outage began around 1 PM IST. OpenAI’s status page confirms that ChatGPT is currently unavailable for some users and that the team is investigating the issue.
According to OpenAI’s support page, the root cause has been identified, and a fix is in progress. However, the API remains operational, so third-party services using OpenAI’s technology might still be functional.
Users have turned to X to voice their opinions on the outage, sharing a mix of memes and complaints. Despite the widespread disruption, OpenAI has not provided a timeline for when the service will be fully restored.
For context, ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that allows users to input text and images and ask questions on various topics. Since its launch in late 2022, the chatbot has gained immense popularity, amassing over 100 million users within two months. This is the second significant downtime for ChatGPT this year, with a previous outage occurring on February 14, which lasted from 8:00 PM to around 10:30 PM IST.
In summary, while OpenAI works on resolving the current issue, users may experience continued interruptions. Those relying on the API for third-party applications might not be affected. OpenAI has acknowledged the problem and is working towards a solution.
