A Tesla insider praises Elon Musk’s unwavering pursuit of improvements in artificial intelligence, crediting his visionary leadership for the company’s groundbreaking successes.
Ashok Elluswamy, hired as the first member of Tesla’s Autopilot team in 2021, has written an article on X about “Elon and AI at Tesla,” where he mentioned all the achievements of Elon Musk in artificial intelligence.
Musk’s vision and determination have consistently pushed the technical team to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks, resulting in huge milestones for the company.
Musk challenged Tesla’s team in 2014 to create the first Autopilot system with little hardware, which they did in 2015 despite early skepticism. By 2016, Tesla had moved on to develop its computer vision systems for Autopilot, completing this challenging feat in just eleven months—a process that other firms often take years to complete.
Musk’s influence led Tesla to create custom silicon for neural networks, still competitive years later. His decision to rely on vision and AI for autonomy rather than sensors and high-definition maps was first derided. Still, it has since proven successful, with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities already deployed in millions of vehicles
Musk began developing humanoid robots known as Optimus in 2021, ahead of the AI boom, which included technologies such as ChatGPT. These robots are being built to be practical and cost-effective, similar to the strategic approach used with car autonomy.
Elon Musk expressed his gratitude to Ashok Elluswamy, noting the Indian-origin robotics engineer’s critical role in Tesla’s “success in AI” and the Autopilot software.
On X, Musk said that Ashok was the first person to join the Tesla AI/Autopilot team and later rose to head all AI/Autopilot development. He said, “Without him and our awesome team, we would just be another car company looking for an autonomy supplier that doesn’t exist. “
