Aptos has introduced a new web-hosted keyless wallet application called “Aptos Connect” to streamline user access to decentralized applications (dApps) by utilizing ZK-proofs for user verification.
The primary goal of Aptos Connect is its ability to allow users to create and manage Aptos blockchain accounts using their Google login credentials.
This approach, announced on July 3, eliminates the need for hardware security modules, passkeys, or multiparty computation networks, which have been common in traditional cryptocurrency wallets.
In an official communication by Aptos Connect, they explain how they make Web3 onboarding easier by allowing users to create and manage their Aptos blockchain accounts with just one click using their Google login without private keys and seamlessly within [the developer’s] app.”
Additionally, the wallet combines OpenID Connect (OIDC) standard and zero-knowledge proofs to securely tether social logins with blockchain accounts. This technique masks both the user’s identity as well as the identity of the login provider so that blockchain data cannot reveal which Google ID is tied to any particular account at Aptos.
Even though the idea of using social logins for crypto wallets is not entirely new because similar functions are offered by platforms like Magic Labs, Web3 Auth, and Smart Wallet from Coinbase, Aptos Connect distinguishes itself by removing additional steps like confirming email links or inputting a password to log in.
Furthermore, the development of Aptos Connect was made possible by Aptos Improvement Protocol 61 (AIP-61), which enables transaction authorization through JSON Web Tokens used by major login providers like Google, Facebook, and Apple.
Moreover, Aptos has indicated that they will also be integrating with Apple ID, which will provide an alternative for users who prefer not to use Google services.
It’s important to note that Aptos Connect relies on the security of the user’s Google account to secure funds. The platform’s documentation advises users that if their Google account is compromised, their crypto assets could be at risk.
