Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic strip, has recently started a discussion in AI and hypnotherapy space, claiming he taught ChatGPT how to perform hypnosis.
Adams, who describes himself as a trained hypnotist and expert persuader, reportedly used these AI-generated techniques on himself with profound effects.
In a series of tweets and a podcast, Adams detailed his experiment with what he calls “waking hypnosis.” This technique, according to Adams, doesn’t induce a trance state but uses persuasive language to influence individuals.
He further explained that he taught ChatGPT various persuasion techniques by interrupting the AI’s responses and introducing new methods or refining existing ones.
Adams claims to have leveraged ChatGPT’s ability to retain information from previous sessions within his account, allowing it to accumulate what he calls “weapons-grade persuasion” techniques. He reports that the AI mastered around six different hypnosis and persuasion methods before he tested it on himself.
The comic creator described the resulting experience as “beyond psychedelics” in its intensity, stating it could induce a powerful “feel good” state instantly and for extended periods. However, Adams has refused to share the specific prompts used, citing their potential danger and addictive nature.
Jack Van Landingham, a certified hypnotherapist, reported similar experiments with AI, noting that he achieved “fairly impressive results” in generating hypnotic scripts. Van Landingham believes there’s potential for AI to output hypnotic language that could guide users into trance states if vocalized or read.
