A notorious crypto phishing app, Angel Drainer, reportedly shut down after its developers were potentially identified, per blockchain security firm Match Systems.
Angel Drainer, linked to over $25 million in crypto losses, enables scammers to drain wallets by deceiving users into approving tokens, often exchanging these tools for a share of stolen funds.
On February 5, Blockaid, another blockchain security firm, reported that Angel Drainer had been used to steal over $25 million from 35,000 crypto users.
On July 16, at approximately 4 pm UTC, Match Systems announced on X that it had made progress in identifying Angel Drainer’s developers. They encouraged victims to report any information to help advance the investigation.
Around four hours later, Match Systems announced that Angel Drainer had suspended its operations. They shared a screenshot from Angel Drainer’s Telegram channel, showing users complaining that the app no longer worked.
Users commented that Angel Drainer was malfunctioning, with errors in value calculations and prompts, noting surprise at the need for manual developer intervention.
Pink Drainer ceased operations on May 17 after stealing $85 million from crypto users, while Violet Drainer shut down on April 25, with its developer citing increased difficulty due to improved Ethereum wallet security.
The shutdown of Angel Drainer marks a significant victory in the fight against crypto phishing scams, highlighting the importance of ongoing security efforts in the crypto space.
