Block, a Bitcoin-focused fintech company founded by Jack Dorsey, has announced the closure of its Cash App service in the United Kingdom.
According to a statement on the app’s website, the platform will cease operations in the UK on September 15, 2024.
Cash App, which launched in the UK in 2018, has provided mobile payment services allowing users to send money to each other. However, unlike its US counterpart, the UK version did not offer Bitcoin-related features.
The company stated, “We do not make decisions like this lightly, as we know they impact our customers, our partners, and our team members who have helped us build to where we are today.” The announcement further explained that this move is part of a strategy that “prioritizes our focus on the United States, and deprioritizes global expansion.”
Block, which rebranded from Square Inc. in 2021, has been increasingly focusing on Bitcoin-centric services under Dorsey’s leadership. In the US, Cash App offers features for buying, selling, sending, and receiving Bitcoin, including transactions via the Lightning Network.
Regarding user communication, the announcement stated that “All Cash App UK account holders will receive a communication today to let them know of this change, and we will continue to update customers in the coming weeks about what changes they can expect and what actions they need to take.”
