A major IT outage was experienced in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Europe, India, and other countries affecting the IT industry, business firms, banks, stock exchanges, airlines, media, and even emergency services on Friday.
Users on the subreddit for cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike have reported issues in India, the United States, and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Britain’s biggest train company has warned passengers to expect disruption due to “widespread IT issues.”
According to multiple media reports, the news first broke out when tech giant Microsoft reported difficulty in using their Microsoft 365 app and other services. The IT outage then spread like wildfire affecting banks, payment gateways, businesses, stock exchanges, airlines, news channels, and even some emergency medical care services in several countries.
The recent outage has caused extensive disruption, largely due to the centralized nature of CrowdStrike’s technology. The centralization means even minor issues at the firm can have global repercussions, potentially shutting down services for all its users.
In contrast, a decentralized web structure could have mitigated the widespread damage caused by the CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor malfunction. This incident underscores the vulnerabilities of a centralized web structure. A decentralized approach would offer greater resilience and security by leveraging blockchain technology. In such a system, only the affected nodes would experience issues, preventing widespread Blue Screen of Death incidents and minimizing service disruptions globally.
By reducing reliance on centralized control points, decentralized systems mitigate the risk of large-scale failures from single software updates or configuration changes. This approach provides a more robust and resilient infrastructure for essential services, highlighting the benefits of decentralization in enhancing system stability and security.
Global Effects of CrowdStrike Malfunction
The Australian government has called for a national emergency meeting even as other countries’ governments are scrambling to bring services back to routine.
Many airline services including United Airlines, American Airlines, Ryan Airlines, and Akasa Air suffered difficulty in operation as several flights began getting suspended. India’s Delhi Airport went offline as electronic services were suspended. London Stock Exchange and Dalal Street in India were also hit due to the IT outage.
In the U.S., police authorities in Alaska warned citizens that their 911 emergency services have been impacted. Similarly, the payment system was hit in Poland and other European nations.
