Co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin disclosed that he had contributed 200 Ether (ETH), or around $532,398 to the Animal Welfare Fund of the Effective Altruism Funds.
Buterin said on X on August 15 that he has completed giving animal currencies to charitable organizations. Buterin’s goal of giving all the animal-themed memecoins he had acquired the previous year to charity causes came to a head with this contribution.
Buterin provided a receipt, which verified the donation’s August 14, 2024, date of origin. Buterin also urged the memecoin community to donate cryptocurrency directly to charity in the future in his essay, highlighting the need for more “sophisticated public goods funding” starting in 2024.
A memecoin project called Neiro on ETH (NEIRO) recently garnered attention by leveraging Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s influence. After Buterin sold the NEIRO tokens, the price initially plummeted by 60%, but it soon rebounded with a 200% surge.
Seizing the moment, the project’s team tagged Buterin on X (formerly Twitter), requesting, “Our humble ask is that you donate part of the proceeds to a stray dog shelter. And thank you for building our playground!”
In response, Buterin shared a donation receipt on X, confirming that he had indeed made a charitable contribution, sending 200 ETH (worth over $500,000) to the Effective Altruism Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund.
This interaction underscored Buterin’s commitment to using crypto proceeds for the public good while highlighting the unpredictable dynamics of the memecoin market.
