A Bengaluru autorickshaw driver attracted a lot of attention after a picture showing him taking cryptocurrency as payment for trips became popular on social media.
X user Garima Sharma posted the picture on August 18, 2024. It depicts a motorist in his car with a notice that says, “We accept cryptocurrency.” Sharma’s comment, “Bro is transforming faster than most literate Indians,” draws attention to the driver’s progressive outlook and starts a discussion on the increasing acceptance of virtual currency.
The post received a lot of attention right away, with close to 1,500 likes and around 54,000 views. People on social media were surprised and impressed by the driver’s adoption of cryptocurrencies.
Social media users reacted with a mix of humor and admiration to the Bengaluru auto driver’s acceptance of cryptocurrency. One user joked that the driver might be attending Web3 hackathons, while another user pointed out the rarity of such acceptance, noting that most people don’t even have crypto accounts yet.
Another user, Mani Wagmi, reflected on how many businesses stopped accepting crypto after 2022, adding that this driver is a rare gem for continuing to do so, recalling his own experiences of paying with crypto in Bengaluru.
This story reflects the gradual integration of cryptocurrency into everyday life, even in unexpected places like local transportation. The driver’s decision to accept digital currency challenges the notion that it is only for the tech-savvy, showcasing how technology and finance are increasingly intersecting in diverse aspects of daily life.
