Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, with an official announcement planned for August 23.
According to ABC News, Kennedy may reveal his decision during a live speech from Phoenix, Arizona. This announcement might include a shift toward working with Republican candidate Donald Trump.
On August 21, Kennedy’s campaign shared that he would “address the nation” about his “present historical moment and his path forward”. His speech is set just a few hours before Trump holds a rally in nearby Glendale, Arizona, raising questions about whether the two candidates might join forces.
However, Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, has also hinted in an interview on August 20 that the campaign could consider forming a “unity party” with Trump.
The possibility of Kennedy dropping out has caused a reaction in the betting markets. On Polymarket, his odds of winning the presidential election dropped to zero.
The chances of him dropping out before September also soared from 10% to 93%. Additionally, a new question was added on August 21 asking whether Kennedy would endorse Trump during his speech, with the odds at 84%.
Kennedy began his campaign as a Democrat in April 2023 but later switched to running as an independent in October. Throughout his campaign, he has criticized both President Biden and Trump.
Although he previously called Trump “the most Radical Left Candidate,” recent developments suggest that an unexpected partnership could be on the horizon.
