Elon Musk, the owner of social media platform X and CEO of Tesla, has clarified that his new artificial intelligence company, xAI, has no plans to make money by sharing its technology with Tesla.
This clarification came after a report by The Wall Street Journal suggested that xAI and Tesla might be working together and that xAI could get paid for sharing its advanced AI systems.
On September 8, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain that xAI’s technology is too advanced to be used in Tesla’s cars.
“The xAI models are gigantic, containing, in compressed form, most of the human knowledge, and couldn’t possibly run on the Tesla vehicle inference computer, nor would we want them to,” he wrote.
However, Musk did mention that Tesla has learned valuable insights from conversations with engineers at xAI. These discussions have helped Tesla make progress with its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, which is designed to enable cars to drive themselves. Still, Musk stressed that Tesla does not need xAI’s technology to achieve this.
The billionaire also shared details about Tesla’s AI capabilities. For instance, Tesla’s AI models turn real-world video data into driving commands and are designed to run on smaller, less powerful computers, which are different from the larger systems used by companies like xAI.
Musk founded xAI in July 2023, and he believes the company could become a strong competitor to other AI companies like OpenAI. He also shared that xAI’s new supercomputer, called Colossus, is now online and will soon grow to be even more powerful.
