A recent example of a simple buy-and-hold strategy in the cryptocurrency market has demonstrated impressive results.
In February 2016, an Ether (ETH) whale purchased 16,636 ETH on the crypto exchange ShapeShift when ETH was trading at $5.23 per token. The total investment amounted to $87,006.Â
On September 16, 2024, the investor started selling some of their tokens after more than eight years of ownership. They started with 350 ETH for $2,340 for each token, resulting in an initial profit of $819,000, or over ten times the initial investment.
The trader still owns almost $38 million worth of Ethereum after selling some of their holdings, demonstrating the potential for large gains on a long-term buy-and-hold strategy. This example shows how investors can profit from price increases over time if they accumulate and hold crypto assets during market swings.
In contrast to the simple buy-and-hold strategy, some traders use more complex approaches. In 2020, a trader leveraged the fractionalization of NFTs to acquire CryptoPunk #2386, a rare $1.5 million Ape-themed NFT, for just 10 ETH ($23,000).
By exploiting a smart contract on the now-defunct platform Niftex, the trader made a “shotgun” bid that went uncontested, successfully acquiring the NFT despite attempts by others to block the move.
On the flip side, complex strategies do not always pay off, as seen in the case of James Fickel, a crypto millionaire and founder of the Amaranth Foundation. Fickel made a significant bet that Bitcoin (BTC) would rise against ETH, wagering $43 million on this expectation.
However, the investor lost a lot of money when ETH beat BTC, increasing his debt to $132 million. This should serve as a warning to traders trying to time short-term market changes because even seasoned investors might lose a lot of money.
These examples highlight the risks and rewards in the volatile crypto market. While some traders profit by holding assets long-term, others lose millions through speculative strategies. The crypto ecosystem offers both opportunities and challenges for different approaches.
