On October 4, 2024, EigenLayer reported the theft of 1.67 million $EIGEN tokens, worth approximately $5.87 million. The incident occurred after a hacker compromised an investor’s email and gained access to the tokens.
However, EigenLayer has reassured its community that the platform’s infrastructure and on-chain protocol remain secure.
The hacker infiltrated an email thread between the investor and EigenLayer’s custodial service, tricking the investor into transferring the tokens to the attacker’s wallet. The stolen $EIGEN tokens were then swapped for $USDC and transferred to exchanges like HitBTC and Kraken.
EigenLayer acted swiftly, freezing part of the stolen funds by collaborating with law enforcement and exchanges. The platform emphasized that the breach was isolated to the email compromise, with no impact on its protocol or smart contracts.
The team is now enhancing security protocols, particularly in communication with investors, and is investigating further. EigenLayer’s community remains on alert, awaiting additional updates. Despite the significant loss for the investor, the platform’s rapid response highlights the importance of cooperation between decentralized platforms and centralized exchanges in addressing crypto theft.
