OpenAI’s newly launched image-generation feature in ChatGPT-4o has taken the internet by storm, with users flooding social media with AI-created images, also called “Ghibli AI Art.”
Many are using the new tool to transform photos into stunning Studio Ghibli-style artwork, making it one of the most talked-about AI features. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined the trend, sharing AI-generated images.
However, the overwhelming demand has forced OpenAI to delay the rollout for free-tier users. Altman confirmed the incident on X by saying, “Images in ChatGPT are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations). Rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for a while.”
Currently, the feature is reserved for only paid subscribers across ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, and Team plans. Although OpenAI initially intended to make the access available to users without a paywall, the rapid spike in demand has caused a halt in those plans.
This is not the first time OpenAI has had to limit access due to these issues. OpenAI had before limited access to its AI video tool Sora because of constraints on computing resources. OpenAI is expanding its infrastructure, but for now, free users will have to wait.
When such a feature finally comes for free-tier users, it’ll probably have all the pieces and daily limits such as DALL-E 3. Meanwhile, paid subscribers can keep on enjoying such pieces, thanks to AI-driven image-creating abilities.
