Paul Atkins, the nominee for Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has received strong backing from Paul Grewal, the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) of Coinbase.
During the Senate Banking Committee hearing, Grewal stressed the need for the creation of transparent and non-prejudicial regulations of digital assets spearheaded by Atkins.
As stated by Grewal, the policies will bring about clarity in the markets and give consumers protection, hence leading to the advancement of technology and finance in the United States.
Atkins, who has criticized the current regulatory framework for being too complex and restrictive, shared his vision of a streamlined approach for digital assets. He pointed out that unclear regulations are hindering capital formation and progress in the industry.
Nevertheless, there are some people who do not support Atkins for the position. Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed concerns about the conflict of interest because of Atkins’ history with Wall Street and firms involved in digital assets, including Sam Bankman-Fried.
She also asked him about his involvement in the 2008 financial crisis. Nevertheless, Atkins came out to defend himself and promised to relinquish his position at Patomak Global Partners within the first three months of his confirmation.
If confirmed, Atkins is likely to seek to relax the regulatory requirements on the cryptocurrency companies. This shift may help the digital asset sector to grow by offering more direction while at the same time minimizing the regulation.
