Pi Network Starts Protocol 26 Rollout Ahead of August 11 Deadline

Key Highlights

  • Pi Network has begun rolling out Protocol 26 for Mainnet nodes, with an August 11 upgrade deadline.
  • Node operators who fail to upgrade before the deadline will lose connection to the Mainnet network.
  • Protocol 26 is the ninth protocol upgrade completed over the past few months.

Pi Network has started rolling out Protocol 26, requiring all Mainnet node operators to update their software before August 11 or risk being disconnected from the blockchain.

In an X post on Wednesday, the Pi Core Team announced the rollout of Protocol 26 as part of the network’s ongoing Mainnet transition. “All Mainnet node operators must complete the upgrade before the deadline to remain connected to the network,” the team wrote.

According to the team, Protocol 26 is one of the final protocol upgrades before Protocol 27, which is expected to complete the current series of network improvements.

Protocol 26 brings Pi closer to its final upgrade

Protocol 26 is the latest step in Pi Network’s ongoing effort to modernize its Mainnet infrastructure. Earlier this year, the project rolled out Protocol 25, requiring node operators to upgrade before June 18 to maintain network compatibility. At the time, Pi described the update as part of a broader roadmap focused on improving decentralization and long-term network stability.

Since then, the Core Team said the blockchain has completed eight successful protocol upgrades, with Protocol 26 serving as the ninth. According to the announcement, only one more major upgrade, Protocol 27, remains before the current protocol transition is complete.

“Protocol 26 is a major milestone ahead of the final planned upgrade, Protocol 27,” the team stated.

Why Mainnet nodes must upgrade now

Unlike Pi’s mobile application, Mainnet nodes are responsible for helping validate blockchain activity. According to Pi’s developer documentation, nodes running outdated software will no longer remain synchronized once Protocol 26 becomes mandatory.

The project said operators who fail to upgrade by the August 11 deadline will be disconnected from the Mainnet until they install the latest version. The update primarily affects users operating Pi Mainnet nodes rather than ordinary mobile miners.

How Pi’s node system works

Unlike Bitcoin and several other major blockchains that rely on Proof-of-Work mining, Pi Network uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP). Under this model, nodes reach consensus through trusted quorum slices instead of competing to solve computational puzzles.

According to Pi’s documentation, the project is designed to make node participation accessible to ordinary users by allowing nodes to run through desktop software instead of requiring specialized mining hardware. The ecosystem currently supports three levels of participation: desktop app users, mainnet nodes, and supernodes.

While SuperNodes participate directly in consensus, ordinary nodes verify blockchain activity and relay transactions throughout the network.

The focus now shifts to Protocol 27

The rollout comes as Pi Network continues expanding its Mainnet infrastructure through a series of protocol upgrades. While Protocol 26 primarily targets node operators, the update represents another step toward completing the network’s current upgrade roadmap ahead of the planned Protocol 27 release.

For now, the immediate priority is ensuring Mainnet node operators complete the Protocol 26 upgrade before the August 11 deadline to maintain network connectivity.
