Former Binance CEO, Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as CZ, recently participated in an interview at the Dubai Blockchain Conference, marking his first public appearance since his incarceration and subsequent release. The interview covered various topics including CZ’s experience in prison, his role at Binance, and his perspective on the crypto market.
The interviewer Austin from the All Coin Daily asked CZ about his prison experience. On this CZ candidly shared his thoughts, emphasizing the emotional toll of losing human connections. He stated, “When everything is taken away from you, what do you miss the most? … I miss my kids, my family, my friends”
CZ also spoke about his sentencing, he said – His charge was for the violation of the Banking Secrecy Act due to not registering a financial company in the U.S. and failing to implement an adequate anti-money laundering program.
He mentioned that no one had previously gone to jail for the specific violation in US history. But he pointed out that in court the judge was good and praised him for the extensive support he received. He said, that once in prison he realized his that his four-month sentence was relatively short compared to others serving five to fifteen years.
In terms of his relationship with Binance, CZ stated that he has stepped down from the role of CEO and is not involved in any day-to-day operations of the company but is still a large shareholder of Binance. He clarified that he can still request for any information but cannot make decisions or give orders. He added the relationship is pretty good.
CZ also highlights that despite banking security violation being a serious offense but it’s also validation that there’s no fraud there’s no users lost money with us. So he believes that his reputation is still pretty strong and now there are more things he would like to focus on.
CZ’s primary focus is now on Giggle Academy, an ambitious educational platform aimed at providing digital education to those without access. “There’s about 700 to 800 million adults who are illiterate, and two-thirds of them are women. On top of that, there’s about 300 to 500 million kids who don’t go to school,” CZ explained.
CZ remained optimistic about the crypto market carefully avoiding specific predictions. “Long term, I’m still very bullish,” he stated, highlighting that as more people engage with crypto, its utility and value will increase.
